I want a BMW. When you hear that word, you think:
a) a car
b) possibly a specific model
c) a color
But if I ask who drives it? For me, it's: Charismatic, energetic daredevil who loves speed and cranking up the music. Everyone knows it's a car. How did BMW make us know what is it and who should drive it 👽?
Answer: Marketing and branding.
- You might think that when big companies started, it was easier. That's partly true, but at that time, there were already Cadillac (1902), Ford (1903), and Buick (1903) in the USA, and Mercedes-Benz (1900) and Rolls-Royce (1906) in Europe. Only later came Chevrolet (1911), Dodge (1914), and BMW (1916).
They began 14 years later and were the 8th company in line. So, they faced competition. They needed to stand out and show how amazing BMWs was.
Yes, marketing was simpler back then. But that's from our viewpoint in 2023. In their time, they relied on traditional methods like radio, posters, leaflets, and storefronts. Today, we consider these basics, even a bit old-fashioned. 🗞 Does anyone still read newspapers ?
They used what they had and got creative. One idea after another. Louder and louder. It's simple: If you don't talk about your business, no one will know about it. And that means no sales.
The world kept moving forward: cars got better and more comfortable over time, new brands emerged, public transport developed. The race of ideas led to the creation of the internet, and then online marketing.
Today, we have websites, social networks – new ways to talk about your business. Just like back then, when newspapers were the way to go. We're still in the race. 🖇 What if right now, this is your chance to beat the competition and become as popular as BMW?
