Career objectives, as with any goals, need to be relentlessly pursued if they are to become reality.
However, before you start to plan ‘how’, before you ‘execute’ the plan and before you start to ‘act’, there is another step you need to take.
You need to improve the probability that your career objectives will become reality by refining them. You need to make sure that they are integrated into your life plan, match your personality style, are consistent with your career drivers and don’t compromise your values and the moral principles that govern your behaviour.
A couple of examples by way of explanation: both careers were notionally on track, but both were unhappy because their career objectives weren’t integrated into or consistent with other aspects of their lives:
Solicitor age 38: personality style unable to cope with tearful, upset and angry clients - solution - move from family law to non-contentious or corporate law.
Teacher age 47: main career driver to work with a peer group but only spending 45 minutes per day with colleagues - solution - radical career change required.
