Are you managing a multi-generational team? Are you managing successfully or are you finding it a struggle leading across multi-generations?
Right now, your team could include:
• Gen Z – ambitious, values-driven, tech-savvy
• Millennials – collaborative, purpose-seeking, allergic to micromanagement
• Gen X – independent, adaptable, quietly crushing it
• Boomers – experienced, loyal, full of wisdom (and probably wondering why Slack has 47 channels)
And leading it? That’s an art and a strategy.
Here’s how to do it without losing your mind or your message:
1. Ditch the stereotypes - Age doesn’t define attitude. Boomers aren’t technophobes. Gen Z isn’t lazy. Judge people by their actions, not their birth year
2. Lead with empathy, not ego - Everyone wants to feel seen and valued. Listen more than you speak. Understand what drives them, not just what works for you
3. Tailor communication don’t overcomplicate - Email, Slack, face-to-face, voice notes, different preferences but same need for clarity. Flex your style, but don’t bend yourself into a pretzel
4. Foster knowledge-sharing in both directions - Mentorship doesn’t have to flow downhill. Create a culture where a Boomer learns from a Gen Zer about AI tools, and a Millennial learns legacy insights from a seasoned vet
5. Focus on shared purpose, not personal quirks - When everyone is united behind the why, the how becomes easier. Cross-generational friction fades when the mission matters more than the memes.
Leading multigenerational teams isn’t about balancing personalities. It’s about harnessing perspectives. Get that right, and your team doesn’t just work better together, they will innovate, collaborate, and win together.
