Jonathan Sands took 6 months off, fully allowed by policy.
The company said they supported equal parenting.
But when he returned?
↳ He was side-lined from key projects
↳ His ambition was questioned
↳ He was labelled “less serious” about his career
↳ His performance was downgraded
All because he did something the policy promised was safe.
The judge ruled in his favour.
Because gender bias isn’t always against women.
And it certainly isn't obvious.
It’s how we behave that breaks the law, and we can't hide behind policies that are only fair on paper.
And that’s exactly why we say;
❌ It’s not enough to have the right policies
❌ It's not enough to offer equal pay and equal opportunities
❌ It's not enough to have the right HR processes if they don't seek out potential gender bias gaps
Because most leaders won’t know they’re doing it.
And your HR isn't lying when they say they've actioned the correct processes.
But correct doesn't diagnose issues.
Correct HR practices doesn't seek out potential biases.
Correct HR processes are just simply a blanket tool allowing you to tick over by masking legal issues.
